If you're seeking treatment for a cracked or chipped tooth, dental crowns are a great solution. Crowns can be made from a number of materials, but porcelain is the most common. Porcelain crowns are the preferred fix because they maintain the natural look of your smile.

What is a Porcelain Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a synthetic replacement or cap for a natural tooth. Porcelain dental crowns are a more attractive alternative to metal crowns because they blend in perfectly with the rest of your teeth and aren't noticeable.

There are a few reasons you may need a dental crown:

  • Covers the tooth after root canal treatment

  • Attaches to dental implants to fill the space where a tooth was

  • Cosmetic enhancement

  • To add strength to a weak tooth

  • Caps broken tooth

How Long Will a Crown Last?

A porcelain crown can last for about 20 years. However, the lifespan of your porcelain crowns can vary depending on how well they're taken care of.

Maintaining regular oral hygiene will help maintain your crowns. It's also best to avoid foods that could stain them, such as red wine, coffee, and dark berries.

During your visit, Dr. Chew will go over proper care instructions with you. In addition, our dental staff is always available for any questions you may have post-treatment.

What is the Procedure for Installing a Crown?

The installation process is dependent upon the reason the crown is being installed and typically takes 1-3 visits. Other than getting dental implants, the process is generally the same.

  • Initial exam - The process begins by conducting a comprehensive dental examination to make sure the patient is a viable candidate for a traditional crown installation

  • Dental molds are taken - Once confirmed, molds of the patient’s mouth are taken and sent to a lab for the porcelain crowns to be custom-made. This ensures the crown will fit seamlessly

  • Tooth shaping - Once we receive your porcelain crowns, Dr. Chew will prep the tooth by shaping it to allow the crown to fit over the remaining portion of it

  • Crown is placed - After the patient’s tooth is appropriately shaped, the crown is cemented on, and their bite is checked to assure proper functionality

How Much Does a Crown Cost?

Typically, a patient can expect to pay $1,000-$2,000 for a crown depending on the reason it is needed. Some procedures for crown installation require more work than others, especially if implants are needed.
