What is Dental Restoration?

Just how it sounds, our dental restoration services aim to restore your teeth to prime working condition.

Dental restoration is important because, unfortunately, teeth won’t get better without intervention. If you’re missing a tooth as an adult, another one isn’t going to grow in its place. If your tooth is damaged or decaying, it won’t repair itself. These problems will only get worse and result in further complications.

Why is Dental Restoration Important?

Many people think dental restoration is primarily for aesthetics. While it does improve the overall look of your mouth, the purpose is rarely solely for aesthetics.

The primary goal of our dental restoration service is to prevent your teeth, gums, and jawbone from further damage. If left untreated, these issues will become more costly to fix and far more painful.

Putting off dental restoration can result in:

  • Unnatural wear of your teeth

  • Digestive issues

  • Malnourishment

  • Bone decay

  • Tooth loss

  • Receding gums

  • Higher costs when you do get treatment

Types of Dental Restoration Procedures

Composite Fillings

Composite fillings are used to repair relatively small areas of damage or decay, which are also known as cavities.

Fillings replace the decayed portion of the tooth that is drilled out to make way for a healthy tooth. They are usually used within the grooves of the cusp (the top of the tooth).

Crowns

Dental crowns are the visible portion of your teeth. With this restoration service, we replace your natural crown with an artificial one to restore function and prevent bone loss.

Dental crowns are generally used in conjunction with dental implants, bridges, or both.

Dental Implants

Dental implants replace the part of the tooth that you can’t see – the root. Implants act as an anchor for either a crown or dentures.

They are usually a key component to permanent tooth replacement.

Dentures and Partials

Dentures and partial dentures (often just called partials) are used when a patient has many teeth that are missing or weak from decay or damage.

Dentures replace an entire dental arch, while partials can replace anywhere from one to almost all teeth in an arch.

Both of these tooth replacement options have removable and permanent versions.

Fixed Bridges

Fixed bridges are just that – fixed. This means they are permanent.

Similar to partials, they don’t replace a full dental arch. Fixed dental bridges generally only replace one to three teeth by attaching to teeth surrounding the gap.

Inlays

Dental inlays are similar to composite fillings. They, too, replace the areas where damage or decay is removed within the grooves of the cusp.

Onlays

Dental onlays are often confused with inlays, but there is a major difference. Onlays replace a portion of cusps. They usually supplement the entire cusp or large sections of cusp edges.

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is necessary when the tissue within the tooth gets infected. It involves going into the tooth and removing the infection and the nerves.

What Does a Dental Restoration Procedure Involve?

At a basic level, most of the dental restoration procedures we do for cracked and decayed teeth involve the same steps.

  1. Remove Damage or Decay

This is an important part of any dental restoration procedure. If any damage or decay is left behind, the tooth will become damaged or start decaying again.

  2. Tooth Shaping

A large part of the tooth shaping happens while the damage or decay is being removed.

However, more shaping is usually required to allow the restoration (such as a dental onlay or composite filling) to stick and stay attached to the tooth.

  3. Repairs

Regardless of the dental restoration you need, something is going to have to replace what is removed in the previous two steps. This final step will offer further protection to the tooth, restore function, and give you a beautiful smile.
